Building games for kids - what they teach and how to choose
A house, a city, a zoo or a whole island - building games are one of children’s favourite genres. We explain what they teach, the main types and how to choose a good one.
What do building games teach?
In a building game there is no single right answer - the child decides what to create and how. That is why this kind of play practises several skills at once:
- Planning - before a house stands, you have to pick a spot, a shape and an order.
- Spatial imagination - the child turns the building around, looks from above and from the side, arranges shapes.
- Patience - bigger projects grow block by block, and the result shows over time.
- Budgeting - in many games building materials cost something, so spending needs a plan.
- Creativity - the same island or house looks different for every child.
Types of building games
Building a house
The easiest start: rooms, furniture and a garden. Good for younger children who like arranging a space for themselves or their characters.
Building a city
Streets, shops and homes for residents. It teaches planning on a bigger scale and that one decision affects the next.
Building a zoo or a park
Enclosures, paths and attractions for visitors. It combines building with caring for animals - ideal for young animal lovers.
Building bridges and towers
Structures that have to stay up. These are puzzles with physics in the background, good for children who like testing what works.
Building an island
The most freedom: land, water, beach, hills and whatever stands on them. On an island you can build anything - from a cottage to a harbour.
How to choose a good building game for your child?
- A calm pace with no countdowns or pressure - building should be relaxing.
- Simple controls that suit your child’s age.
- Saved progress, so the work is not lost when the game closes.
- No paid random rewards and no ads interrupting play.
- No chat with strangers - and if there is shared building, only with friends.

Building on screen and on the carpet
A building game will not replace real blocks - and it does not have to. It works best together with them: your child can build something on screen first and then try to recreate it with blocks, or the other way round. Short sessions and admiring the builds together make a good family evening.
Your World - building an island with your pet in YourPet
We are working on an island building game where your YourPet pet lives. The land is built from blocks, items are bought with coins earned in mini-games, and one click places one block - no rush. More in the announcement Your World - an island building game with your pet.
Frequently asked questions
From what age are building games suitable?
Simple house-decorating games work even for preschoolers, especially with a parent’s help. Building a city or a large island usually appeals more to school-age children.
Are online building games free?
Many have free versions. It is worth checking how the game pays for itself, though - ads and in-game purchases can get in the way of play.
How long can a child play building games?
Shorter and regular sessions work better than long ones. A game that saves progress helps - it is easy to stop and come back tomorrow.
Are building games good for children?
In moderation, yes. They practise planning, imagination and patience, and a well-chosen game has no ads, paid random rewards or contact with strangers.
